ROYAL
THEATRE / DERNGATE NORTHAMPTON The Royal Theatre is a
19th century
theatre in Northampton, England. The Grade II
listed building was
opened in 1884 and designed by C. J. Phipps.
It is next door and physically linked to the more modern Derngate theatre, and since 1999 both theatres have been managed by the Northampton Theatres Trust. Both the Royal and the Derngate Theatres reopened in October 2006 after an 18 month closure, for a £14.5m redevelopment. The Royal is a relatively small, but absolutely beautiful Victorian gem, and full of atmosphere. The Derngate next door is a 20th Century "Brutal" design, but is comfortable. It is also claimed to be in the top three UK concert venues for its acoustic - excellent for listening to classical music. |
