SAVOY The Strand WC2 Built in 1881 for Richard D’Oyly Carte by
the architect CJ Phipps, it was the first public building in the world
to be lit throughout by electricity. In 1929 the theatre was
transformed in art deco style with aluminium leaf finishes by Frank
Tugwell and designer Basil Ionides. It is now a Grade II listed
building.
While the theatre was being renovated in 1990, a fire gutted the building, except for the stage and backstage areas. Tugwell's and Ionides's designs had been preserved, however, allowing the accurate restoration of the theatre under the direction of the architects Sir William Whitfield, Hugh Wotner and the theatre's manager, Kevin Chapple. It reopened on 19 July 1993. ![]() The restored auditorium Capacity: 1,158
