GIELGUD formerly GLOBE Shaftesbury Avenue WC1 Designed in 1906 by WGR Sprague, with its
oval gallery and Regency staircase, the front of house is considered by
many to be the best on the Avenue. Though it used to bear the name of
Shakespeare’s theatre, his plays have rarely been performed here. The
Globe was renamed in honour of Sir John Gielgud in 1994 in anticipation
of the reopening of the reconstruction of Shakespeare’s Globe theatre
on Bankside.
Décor: Tall, handsome wooden doors lead form the street into a cool atrium and delightful butterscotch foyer ornamented with gold mirrors, wreaths and leather settees. Red velvet stalls in pink auditorium decorated with gilt musical instrument motifs beneath a stunning chandelier. Capacity 889
