DONMAR WAREHOUSE

DONMAR WAREHOUSE
Earlham Street WC2

Theatrical producer Donald Albery formed the Donmar company in 1953, the name reputedly formed from DONald Albery and MARgot Fonteyn, the ballerina and a close personal friend.

London’s only West End studio theatre, it was used by the RSC from 1977-81 as space for experimental works and new plays.  It was bought by the Maybox group and reopened in 1982 to stage Sondheim’s Assassins under the direction of the artistic director Sam Mendes. One of the capital’s most exciting venues.

Décor: Set in the shell of a 19th century warehouse, the auditorium is both distinctive and colourful with original brickwork and woods with newly installed bench-seating. Intimate and comfortable with the audience in  three sides of the stage.

Capacity: 252 (plus standing room)
