COLISEUM

COLISEUM
St Martin's Lane WC2

London's largest theatre, it was designed  in 1904 by Frank Matcham. One of the most technically advanced theatres of its time.

Originally a variety house, it was famous for appearances by Ellen Terry, Edith Evans, Sarah Bernhardt and the Ballet Russe; it later became home to many large scale productions. Since 1968 it has been home of the English National opera. ENO distinguishes itself from the Royal Opera by using principally British singers and performing all works in English.

Décor: Breathtakingly opulent foyer. Mosaic ceilings, wood panelling and huge portraits, including one of a sneering Lilian Bayliss (“Not so keen on plays, dear; don’t know what they’re about”). Huge auditorium with blue velvet seats to match walls of boxes, cream masonry and two trios of gold lions rampant on top of the boxes nearest the stage.

Capacity: 2,356 (plus 150 standing)
