Even if it shows no interest in following its mother into the theatre, the baby which actress Polly Hemingway is expecting will be able to claim that it once closed a West End show. Why Me?, in which Hemingway is starring with Richard Briers at the Strand is due to close on August 3 at the end of the performers' first six-month contract period. A spokeswoman for producer Michael Codron said Briers was expected to leave when his contract ran out because of prior commitments to film a television series in which Hemingway is also appearing. Originally the plan was to recast Briers and make arrangements to “work round” Hemingway’s television commitments to allow her to stay with the show.  But the plan was abandoned when Hemingway, wife of Roy Marsden who plays detective Adam Dalgliesh in television versions of PD James's mysteries, announced that she was pregnant. Codron decided against recasting two parts and is replacing Why Me? with another comedy, Look No Hans, at the Strand.
