The Stage: Harvey Crane
The new comedy by Richard Harris has opened at the Palace Theatre. Its
set portrays three identical houses on a new suburban executive
estate and we are presented with three separate couples who are to be
overwhelmed by intrusions from a garrulous mother-in-law, marvellously
played by Irene Handl. One of the funniest plays for a long time, it
might as well be called “Mum takes over” in place of its existing
mundane title. Irene Handl is Mrs Hinson; interfering, lovable, doting
and astringent
to her daughter- in-law, and over protective to her son. She turns her
short stay into a take-over bid of the reluctant neighbours, creating
in the process mayhem and high comedy.
