A murderous
black comedy, written in the Joe Orton manner, Wise Child was set in a
seedy boarding house run by a homosexual hotelier with a religious
bent. Guinness played a criminal on the run who in order to elude the
police has disguised himself as a mother with a grown-up son. He had
two voices, one gruff, the other genteel. It was like watching Magwitch
in drag.
