Salzburg is the most beautiful city of Austria and perhaps the most splendid urban creation in the world. A city in the mountains - a city of music, art and architecture. Salzburg is like a piece of baroque Italy miraculously transferred north of the Alps. Its whole inspiration is southern but one example of German romanticism remains - the Castle, or Festung, which perches on the peak of a hill; dominating the city. From the Festung one looks out over the city, to a magnificent mountain landscape. Salzburg is also a holiday city, one in which the unique atmosphere can be savoured as its pleasures are enjoyed. Some visitors will make for Mozart's birthplace, others the lofty Hohensalzburg fortress - reached by funicular - the Leopoldskron Palace of Sound of Music fame or the Mirabell Garden. There are festivals and concerts in plenty, and everywhere the inviting street cafes.

Much of Salzburg's wealth of interest can be seen in a few days. The old part of the city, south of the river, is a compact area dominated by the Hohe Festung; a mixture of open squares, lovely old buildings and narrow lanes, quaint shops and a sprinkling of coffee shops, their tables and chairs spilling onto the pavement. Stroll along the bustling 'Getreidegasse' - the main shopping street of the old town - and spend an hour in the Mozart Museum, the birth place of the  composer. The building houses an interesting collection of memorabilia and models of stage settings of his operas. Take the funicular, to the Hohe Festung - from there you can walk the hill footpath to the 'Monchberq' Down to the city by lift. There are guided tours of the Festspielhauser' - Salzburg's festival concert halls, and a wide selection of coach tours. For an inexpensive trip take the public bus (50 minutes) to Berchtesgaden. City sightseeing at 09.30 and 14.00 from the Mirabell Platz.

The Imperial Palace, the former residence of the Hapsburgs, Vienna's famous State Opera, St. Stephen's Cathedral, the National Theatre and Parliament. Vienna was the home of many great composers and is an exciting experience for music lovers.
