1989 THREE HANSEATIC CITIES TOUR
10 days tour by Rail

Day 1
20 June 1989
Leave London Liverpool Street station on the 19:35 boat train and travel from Harwich to Hook of Holland on the night ferry.

Days 2-3
21-22 June 1989

Depart Hook of Holland at 08:58 for Osnabruck and change there onto an InterACity train to Bremen leaving at 13:22. Arrive in Bremen at 14:12 and stays for two nights at Hotel Schaper-Siedenburq.

This is a tourist class hotel situated close to the station and within easy walking distance of the Old Town.

Bremen's historic town centre, still encircled by its chain of moats, now set out as parkland is largely traffic free and at its heart lies the Market Place. From there enter the Bottcherstrasse, lined with gabled brick buildings housing art galleries, delightful shops and fine restaurants. Not far away is the Schnoor, Bremen's most attractive quarter where half-timbered house-tops almost meet across narrow lanes. Bremen offers a rich cultural programme and a lively nightlife with pubs, dancing, discos and night clubs.

Days 4-5
Leave Bremen at 12.38 by direct train to Lubeck and stay 2 nights at Hotel Lindenhof.

The city is over 800 years old. The centre, completely surrounded by water, contains the largest collection of historic buildings of any city in Germany. The skyline is dominated by the seven towers of its fine medieval churches.
Nearby stands the venerable Town Hall overlooking the enclosed Market Place where a flower market is held every weekday. Along its narrow lanes and passages stand beautiful gabled buildings; its mighty city gates bear witness to its previous greatness.

Days 6-8
Leave Lubeck at 11:44 by direct train to arriving at 12:44 and stay at Hotel Metro-Merkur for 3 nights.

Previously two adjoining hotels, this medium grade hotel has undergone a thorough renovation and rebuilding to provide very attractive public rooms. Facilities include a breakfast room, bar and TV lounge. No restaurant, but its position close to the main station means that there is a wide choice of eating places in the immediate vicinity. 110 bedrooms, all with private shower WC. A good tourist class hotel providing a very acceptable standard of comfort.
This great seaport, situated 70 miles inland, is also a most attractive city. With its two Alster lakes, the inner lined with elegant buildings; the outer with parks and fashionable residential areas, its parks and green areas and the mighty river Elbe, the city literally floats on water. It boasts more bridges than Venice, and full advantage is taken of the water with sightseeing boats, yachts and dinghies galore.

A chain of parks links the lakes with the river providing an oasis of peace in the heart of this bustling city. Hamburg's nightlife, centred on the St. Pauli district close to the Harbour, is world famous, but the city has also gained a reputation as a city of the arts with an excellent ballet and opera company, theatres and a host of art galleries and museums. A truly all year round city.

Days 9-10
Leave Hamburg by 15.30 train direct to Hook of Holland for overnight ship to Harwich and London.
